henderhead

an unofficial fan site for Matt Henderson's demos

Matt Henderson posts a small mathematical demo most days — a maze you can solve by hanging it up, every 24-bit colour in one picture, a Fourier series driven by a continued fraction. They are beautiful, and they are videos. This site rebuilds them as things you can turn the knobs on.

Nothing here is his: no images, no video, no code. Each demo is written from scratch out of the mathematics he described in public, and every page says whose idea it was and links to the original — which is better than what's here. He has not endorsed this, and if he wants it gone it goes.

Built

The queue

Demos of his we would like to rebuild. None of these has been started, and the automated pipeline described below has not been built and will not be until the gate below is passed. The list is here so that what we are proposing is legible rather than a surprise.

The obvious idea, once you have rebuilt one of these, is to stop doing it by hand: watch his feed, and when a new demo appears, build an interactive version of it automatically. That is the intention behind this site. It is also the thing that most needs asking about first, so here is the whole position in one place.

Gate zero. No automated pipeline runs against Matt Henderson's feed until he has been asked, in plain words, and has said yes. Not a notification, not an opt-out, not a "we assumed you wouldn't mind" — asked, and answered. Until then this site is hand-built, one demo at a time, at the pace of someone who read a post and wanted to play with it.

As of : he has not been asked. Six demos are built. Nothing is watching his feed.

What we would be asking for, so that the ask is not vague:

  1. To keep rebuilding his demos as interactive versions, credited to him by name on every page, with a link to his original post above the fold.
  2. To do it automatically — a job that notices a new demo, works out the mathematics from what he wrote, and publishes a page here, with a human reading it before it goes out.
  3. To be told to stop, in whole or for any single demo, by any means he likes, and for that to take effect the same day.

What we are not asking for and would not do:

If you are Matt Henderson and you want something changed or removed: say so however is easiest — a reply on Bluesky is plenty — and it will be done. You do not have to give a reason and you will not be argued with. The same goes for anyone whose work turns up here by mistake.

What counts as a good rebuild

A video shows you the answer. The thing a rebuild can add is the why: a control that makes the mechanism visible, and a number you can push until the effect breaks. So each demo here has to earn its existence on four counts, and the pages say so out loud:
